AmeriCorps Clearwater is a part of the AmeriCorps family of national service programs often described as the "domestic Peace Corps." Federally funded through Volunteer Florida, the Governor's Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, the program begins its 18th year of operation in 2013. AmeriCorps Clearwater aims to improve the lives of citizens by providing child safety education, engaging in community service and assisting the Clearwater Police Department to increase response to the needs of the community.

The majority of our 19 AmeriCorps members are college students studying Criminal Justice at either St. Petersburg College or the University of South Florida St Petersburg. AmeriCorps Clearwater gives these students a hands on, real life experience working directly with officers and law enforcement staff. Members are encouraged to participate in officer ride alongs, shadowing opportunities and various speakers and field trips are utilized to give them a well rounded experience. Although specifically appealing to these students, AmeriCorps is a great experience for anyone interested in serving their community and is not limited to those pursuing a career in law enforcement.

AmeriCorps Clearwater is also a member of the Florida Suncoast SafeKids Coalition through All Children's Hospital. Members participate in bicycle and pedestrian safety education and select individuals are certified in Child Passenger Safety. AmeriCorps runs a fitting station at the Main Station to assist parents with car seat questions, education and installation assistance.
