Department Awards Program

The Clearwater Police Department expects the highest levels of professional conduct from all of its employees at all times. We also believe that our members deserve to be recognized for excellence in the performance of their assigned duties. Awards are presented according to the following criteria. All employees of the department are eligible to receive these awards if the individual award criteria are satisfied.

Medal of Valor - Awarded to a member who, intelligently and in the line of police duty, performs an act of gallantry and valor above and beyond the call of duty, at imminent personal hazard to life and with knowledge of the risk.

Medal of Distinguished Service - Awarded to a member who, intelligently and in the line of police duty, performs an act of outstanding personal bravery at imminent personal risk to life and with knowledge of the hazards involved.
Medal of Meritorious Service - Awarded to a member who knowingly performs (1) An act, while involved in a criminal investigation and the act demonstrates a high level of courage and creditable police enforcement action; or, (2) Life-sustaining actions which involve no personal hazard to the member.
Award of Excellence - Awarded to a member who performs an act or a series of acts over a period of time which demonstrate a high degree of professional excellence through the success of difficult police projects, programs, investigations, or situations but which involve no personal hazard to the member.
Chief's Unit Citation - Awarded to two or more members who perform an act or a series of acts over a period of time which demonstrate a high degree of teamwork and professionalism and which result in the attainment of departmental goals, thus increasing the department's effectiveness and efficiency. This award may be presented alone or in addition to any other award. If it results from a particular incident, only those personnel actually working at the time are eligible; if it results from a series of acts over a period of time, all personnel assigned to the unit are eligible.   Purple Heart - Awarded to a member who, in the line of duty, receives a significant injury. This award is primarily intended to recognize members who are injured as the result of an aggravated battery, but the selection committee may consider injuries from other, non-intentional events such as fires, explosions, collisions, etc., as valid justification.

Combat Cross - Awarded to a member who, acting intelligently and in the line of duty, performs an act which upholds the high standards of the law enforcement profession while engaged in personal combat with an armed adversary.   Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice - Awarded to the family of any sworn member who dies while in the lawful performance of police duty. This award is intended to recognize the family for their sacrifices over the years in support of their loved one's chosen profession. The member shall be eligible posthumously for any other awards that may be appropriate.
