The Clearwater Police Department expects the highest levels
of professional conduct from all of its employees at all times.
We also believe that our members deserve to be recognized
for excellence in the performance of their assigned duties.
Awards are presented according to the following criteria.
All employees of the department are eligible to receive these
awards if the individual award criteria are satisfied.

Medal of Valor - Awarded
to a member who, intelligently and in the line of police duty,
performs an act of gallantry and valor above and beyond the
call of duty, at imminent personal hazard to life and with
knowledge of the risk.

Medal
of Distinguished Service - Awarded to a member who, intelligently
and in the line of police duty, performs an act of outstanding
personal bravery at imminent personal risk to life and with
knowledge of the hazards involved. |

Medal
of Meritorious Service - Awarded to a member who knowingly
performs (1) An act, while involved in a criminal investigation
and the act demonstrates a high level of courage and creditable
police enforcement action; or, (2) Life-sustaining actions which
involve no personal hazard to the member.

Award
of Excellence
- Awarded to a member who performs an act or a series of acts
over a period of time which demonstrate a high degree of professional
excellence through the success of difficult police projects,
programs, investigations, or situations but which involve no
personal hazard to the member. |

| Chief's
Unit Citation - Awarded to two or more members who perform
an act or a series of acts over a period of time which demonstrate
a high degree of teamwork and professionalism and which result
in the attainment of departmental goals, thus increasing the
department's effectiveness and efficiency. This award may be
presented alone or in addition to any other award. If it results
from a particular incident, only those personnel actually working
at the time are eligible; if it results from a series of acts
over a period of time, all personnel assigned to the unit are
eligible. |

Purple
Heart - Awarded to a member who, in the line of duty, receives
a significant injury. This award is primarily intended to recognize
members who are injured as the result of an aggravated battery,
but the selection committee may consider injuries from other,
non-intentional events such as fires, explosions, collisions,
etc., as valid justification.

| Combat
Cross - Awarded to a member who, acting intelligently and
in the line of duty, performs an act which upholds the high
standards of the law enforcement profession while engaged in
personal combat with an armed adversary. |

Medal
of Ultimate Sacrifice - Awarded to the family of any sworn
member who dies while in the lawful performance of police duty.
This award is intended to recognize the family for their sacrifices
over the years in support of their loved one's chosen profession.
The member shall be eligible posthumously for any other awards
that may be appropriate. |
