The Support Services Division is charged
with providing administrative and support functions to the police
department. The division is commanded by a captain who oversees
the property and evidence function, the fiscal services, the records
section, computer operations, and the differential response unit.
The Support Services Division serves as the infrastructure of
the police department.
The Records
Section stores all offense reports and traffic crash reports
and provides license and permit services to the public. The Records
Section Manager responds to public records requests for reports
and data held by the police department. The Records Section also
provides reports and information to businesses, other governmental
agencies and the public.
The Differential Police Response (DPR) Unit handles
calls for service which do not require the response of a police
officer. Reports are taken either via telephone or in-person from
citizens at the police department front counter. The DPR Unit
handles approximately 30% of all police calls for service, thereby
increasing the availability of sworn officers to respond to more
serious incidents.
The Computer Operations Unit is commanded
by a civilian professional and supports all of the police department's
computer systems, both hardware and software. The Computer Operations
Unit is responsible for administering the department's strategic
technology plan, including the acquisition of new technologies
and the maintenance and upgrade of existing systems.
The Property Unit provides for the storage
and retrieval of all property and evidence placed into police
custody prior to 1993. Since 1993, the police department has contracted
with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office to handle all property
and evidence. The Property Unit maintains liaison with the Sheriff's
Office in matters relating to property and evidence. The unit
is also responsible for the maintenance of police department facilities.
The Fiscal Services Unit prepares the department's
employee payroll, coordinates purchasing within the department,
administers the fiscal reporting requirements for grants awarded
to the department, and assists in the preparation of the annual
budget.
